How do you get rid of bugs on a fern?

I recently purchased a fern and now I notice little flies all around the soil. How do I get rid of these things???

How do you get rid of bugs on a fern?
get a spray bottle dosent matter what size and mix a very small amount of dish soap and spray on leaves and soil it only takes a drop or so depending on how big the plant is bugs dont like the smell or taste of it....
Reply:Put some rubbing alcohol into a spray bottle, and spray the leaves and soil. This works for aphids and other small insects that infest potted plants. It will not harm the fern, but will kill the bugs. It will also be safe for pets or outdoor animals that may encounter the plant, as the alcohol will evaporate quickly and won't leave a residue.
Reply:you should ask the idiot that gets rid of carpenter bees with diesel fuel.

sorry for the rant but I will no longer answer any bug questions.

Seams idiots are in abundance on this board so I will refrain from the silly questions.

GOT A BUG PROBLEM DEAL WITH IT.

Does anyone have any tricks to make a Boston fern fuller?

I have a Boston fern that a friend gave me as a baby plant. I have cared for it for 2 years but I can't get it to become a full plant. It has leaves and seems healthy but it is a skinney plant. Any ideas how to make it a full beautiful plant?

Does anyone have any tricks to make a Boston fern fuller?
EACH YEAR I BUY 2 BOSTON FERNS FOR MY NORTH FACING PORCH. FIRST THING I DO IS REPOT THEM INTO A LARGER,DEEPER POT. I NEVER USE MIRACLE GROW OR ANY OTHER STORE BOUGHT FERTILIZER, ABOUT ONCE A WEEK I MAKE A POINT TO USE EGGS IN SOMETHING, I SAVE ONLY THE SHELLS AND PUT THEM INTO A 2 QUART PITCHER FILLED WITH WATER, SOAK OVERNIGHT, TAKE EGG SHELLS OUT AND USE THE WATER TO EQUALLY WATER EACH FERN. MY FERNS USUALLY MEASURE ABOUT 8 FT AROUND AND 4 FT LONG. IT'S UNREAL I'M TELLING YOU. MY GRANDMA TAUGHT ME THIS TRICK, I WATER WITH NORMAL WATER EVERY OTHER DAY UNTIL IT RUNS OUT THE BOTTOM, ONCE A WEEK WITH EGG WATER.
Reply:Have you tried repotting it. Take it out of its pot and make sure it isn't root-bound. Add some fresh dirt and water with a little miracle grow
Reply:Repot. Use potting soil that has the fertilizer already mixed in. Then make sure it gets some morning sun. Depending on where you live it might be able to take an hour or six. But if you have had it in a rather shaded area you can gradually increase the exposure to light. You should see new growth pretty soon...but remember after transplanting it will make new roots before it has new top growth...and that is what you want. Healthy roots mean a healthy plant.

Hope this helps.
Reply:Repot it, use black rich soil with lots of sun light. Don't use M. Grow. Use a plant fertilizer called Four All Seasons, you can get it at www.biosourcefertilizer.com, it will give your fern that extra nutrients it needs that soil can't regularly produce.

Best way to attach an elk horn fern to a board?

I've got an elk horn fern currently growing in a pot and I thought it might look nicer on a piece of wood.

What is the best way to attach it to the wood?

Best way to attach an elk horn fern to a board?
wire and spagnum moss .....

read here, too...

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en%26amp;rls=c...

http://www.gardeningtipsnideas.com/2006/...

To mount a staghorn fern, place the fern on a hardwood board that is wider than the basal fronds. Place a pile of sphagnum moss just below center and and sit the fern on top, allowing the basal fronds to come in contact with the medium while the bud sits just above. Attach the fern securely with wire to the board and then hang in a suitable position.

be sure the board or piece of wood has a sturdy hanger attached before you start with the plant....

there was a big one at our nursery that lived in a tree outside all summer.... they had a 'shelf' set up in the tree to hold it...and when it came in for the winter, one whole wall of the green house belonged to it....monster!!...
Reply:Well depending on the pot ....you can drill a hole through the side of the pot and use a screw to attach it to the pot....If it's a ceramic pot soak it for a while....Remembering the drill very slow....

Use a piece of chicken wire or any wire ...wrap it around the put and nail or screw it to the board first...then stick in the pot

Use a wire basket...sit it in the basket and hang up

What can I do to help bring back my fern?

My fern is dying..what do ferns like and what can I do to help it come back to life? I water it the same amount as my other plants and it gets the same sun. Its the only one dying.

What can I do to help bring back my fern?
Ferns are pretty tough critters.

Lift the pot. Light? dry, aerate, water

Heavy? too wet, let it dry out.

Grab your pruners and whack it all back to the dirt. Serious, then life as usual and watch it go nuts. When was the last time you fertilized it?

They'll take all ranges of sun, prefer some sun, some shade.

you'll do fine
Reply:Some types of ferns don't like direct sunlight. Put it in a place that is more shady and see what happens.
Reply:It may not need as much water nor as much sunlight as your other plants. Move it out of sunlight and instead of watering it every time you do your other plants, give it a misting instead everyother time.

What is the best way to take care of a maidenhair fern and not kill it?

Whenever I buy a maident hair fern, I feel guilty becasue they always die on me. Someone told me not to water them on the top of the soil, but to keep a little water in the dish under the pot at all times, to keep the soil moist. Is that right? Any other words of wisdom?

What is the best way to take care of a maidenhair fern and not kill it?
I always water all my plants from the bottom. they seem to like it better. You can also try putting it in the bathroom. Ferns love the steam from the shower. Also try to keep it out of direct sunlight. Hope this helps.
Reply:Ferns do best away from direct sunlight. They are definately shade lovers. Extreme heat and cold can also kill them. Try watering with room temp or a little warmer water.

How do you take care of a Boston Fern hanging outside?

The Boston Fern very green and pretty at the top, but underneath there are lots of dried stems and stuff. Do I cut all the brown away and just leave the pretty good top?

How do you take care of a Boston Fern hanging outside?
When you water it, water the leaves and stems also. Remove the brown ones and you will have more room for it to grow.
Reply:check to see if it's to root bound,,yes cut all the dead out of it,they like a moist area,so misting it everyday is a good idea an not alot of sun
Reply:keep the plant watered and use water and eptson salt mixture to make the fern a deep green color, (1 cup eptson salt to 1 gallon water) They use this at landscape dealers to get the deep color.
Reply:Try some nutrients first, like Peters 20-20-20 and if that don't work then cut them off. Just a little at first you don't want to throw it into shock, and make sure to foliage feed it also with a spray bottle

What kind of care does a Boston Fern require?

What do I need to do to keep a Boston Fern happy. Its a Christmas gift and I don't know room temp, water schedule, fertilization, in short I know nothing about them. Please help!

What kind of care does a Boston Fern require?
Indirect or bright diffused light is best. They don't like full sun.

Moderately moist soil is preferred. Water thoroughly when just the soil surface is dry to the touch. Make sure your plants have good drainage. During active growth, these plants should be watered on a regular basis in order for the soil to remain moist. Try to use water that doesn't contains harmful chlorine. Or let your tap water set out overnight before using it for watering.

The Boston fern is easy to grow, but likes high humidity. Bright, dry conditions will cause yellowing and browning of the fronds. Misting a Boston fern from time to time is a good idea.

http://www.bigy.com/content/flrl/prep/ca...

Try to keep the temperature in the range of 65-72 degrees.

http://www.plant-care.com/boston-fern.ht...

Here's a nice Q %26amp; A site on Boston Ferns:

During its growing season use a general fertilizer (20-20-20-, 10-10-10). Do not fertilize in the winter months. Resume when spring arrives. Boston ferns are tropical and really tolerate temperatures of 50 degrees and not much below that.

http://www.emilycompost.com/boston_fern....

Good Luck! Hope this is helpful.
Reply:You're welcome! If you don't want to fuss with misting, you can use a humidifier in your room or put you plant on a pebble tray. Just don't let the plant sit in water, or the roots will rot.

Good Luck! Happy New Year!!! Report It

How do I care for a love fern?

I bought my girlfriend a love fern because I love her. How do I care for it?

How do I care for a love fern?
You love it. You love it with a warm, moist environment. You love it with regular, light feedings of a liquid fertilizer. You love it with light shade or dappled sunlight. You love it by misting it lightly and watering it regularly, but don't love it too much because it doesn't love too much water all the time.
Reply:Lots of Love........ and a few hugs. (Lullabyes)

Don't forget the 3 square!!!

How do I keep Japanese Beetles from eating up my fern baskets?

Its the type of ferns you buy at a greenhouse in the hanging baskets. This happens every year, they eat up the top of the fern.

How do I keep Japanese Beetles from eating up my fern baskets?
Try trapping them. Traps can be purchased in the gardening depts of home and garden centers. This is very effective and I do it myself. It is easy. Follow the product instructions for trap placement.

Another option is to buy special insect spray for plants and spray the ones you don't want them to eat.

Since Japanese beetles were grubs before they morphed into beetles, the ultimate solution (for next season and the ones after that) is to control the grubs in your yard. It may be too late to do this for the current season but keep it in mind for next year. One such product is called "Grub-X". Or ask where you buy gardening supplies.
Reply:spray with liquid Sevin or Sevin dust.Have been doing this for last few years.I have less beetles this year.
Reply:Get some Sevin dust at the garden center in Walmart.

It is safe and effective. Dust your ferns today Beetles gone tomorrow.

If you need a duster for Sevin dust cut the leg off a pair of old pantyhose. Save the foot %26amp; about 12 inches up the leg. Put a couple cups of Sevin dust in the foot %26amp; hold by the top. Use a bouncing motion %26amp; a little cloud of dust will come out.
Reply:Try spraying them with insect spray. make sure the literature on the bottle or can says that it can be used on ferns. probably seven or isotox will work.
Reply:kill them

How do i make a new spider fern out of an older spider fern?

okay so i am just trying to make a new spider fern plant, i have one already but i just want to make a new one from the orignal one, if you happen to know how could you let me know?

How do i make a new spider fern out of an older spider fern?
If your plant is old enough to have the "spiders" on the ends of the stalks, just cut one off and pot it in new potting soil and keep it watered. They are new little plantlets and should root well very quickly for you. Just keep it moist, you don't have to water it every day. Once or twice a week will be enough.
Reply:Taking the new babies off of the shoots is probably the best way but if your plant does not have shoots with babies you could cut the mother plant in half at the roots and transplant both halves into new pots with fresh potting soil and don't forget to water right away.

Will my fern grow back in the spring?

I don't know a lot about the type of fern it is just that it is a light green full fern while in season. This is my first year to have one so I didn't know if it would come back or if it is time for me to get rid of it.

Will my fern grow back in the spring?
Cut back the dead looking areas to about 2'' and just add over some more potting soil or light mulch and it will come back to it's full glory in a few months or less, depending on your climate.
Reply:yes they will be bac
Reply:that would depend on your hardiness zone. i'm from ohio and have ferns and they grow back every year. now if you live somewhere with colder winter temps. it could be a problem. hope this helps....
Reply:If it is an asparagus fern it should grow back.

Try to protect your ferns during frost season by either bringing them indoors or covering them and mulching them.

What is the correct way to "repot" a staghorn fern?

My staghorn fern outgrew it's wood base. When I pulled it off the base there were no roots visible or any obvious way to reattach it to a new and bigger base.

What is the correct way to "repot" a staghorn fern?
i have a really huge one that is still on a dinky little cork bark-you can just get a larger piece of cork bark-put a bit of sphagnum moss on the bark between the staghorn and the bark and use plastic wires to wrap around the fern and the bark to keep it in place. you don't need to remove these wires when the roots grow to cling the bark as the staghorn will grow new 'sterile' leaves on top of the wires. i actually used netting material from those frilly shower puffs that are used to lather soap that i bought from the dollar store and it proved to keep the staghorm very stable and once it strated growing new sterile fronds (the brown ones that grow around the base)it hid the netting completely-actually i can't remove it even if i wanted to now. just remember to use sphagnum moss and not dirt or anything like that.

Where can i find a big fern plant?

I'm looking for a plant thats more of a fern than a plant but its not a fern. And i want it to grown to be about 6 feet tall maybe a little more or less that can live in Maryland. Any ideas?

Where can i find a big fern plant?
You can purchase the Cinnamon Stalk fern (Osmunda regalis (royal fern) and Osmunda cinnamomea (cinnamon fern), the root fiber being used horticulturally; the fiddleheads of O. cinnamomea are also used as a cooked vegetable.see below)

Mine have grown up to 5 feet! I do keep them thinned out, to prevent too many from fighting over small spaces. In turn, this has allowed the older plants to grow very tall.
Reply:Take a trip to the Nursery.

Look for one that has Gold in it.
Reply:Hi. Just as a matter of interest check this tree fern out ...Cyathea dregei. Magnificent plant but a bit rare... from Southern Africa. Have real fern that is 6 feet or more tall why settle for second best. Many of our indigenous species have been used overseas quite successfully.
Reply:i have one for you . a giant austrailian tree fern. if you are uinterested let me know
Reply:Check with your local plant nursery. They would be your experts on plantings for your location and can advise you and make suggestions.

Why are the fronds on my tree fern drooping?

I have just planted a tree fern at the back of my garden (in the shade) The fronds have begun to droop - I planted it as the text book says - 1ft down etc and watered well ( I live in London so soil is full of clay.) Could it be too shady?

Why are the fronds on my tree fern drooping?
Give it time to establish itself, Did you give it feed, like bonemeal, it will soon perk up, keep watering.
Reply:Give it some time to settle and water water water. Watering the crown and trunk is also useful as the trunk is actually the rhizome and root of a tree fern. Chicken pellets in the crown are a good feed as are most of the proprietry brands of ferilizer. My Dicksonia needs no care at all even in winter but I do water in dry spells, not that we've seen a lot of that this year!
Reply:dicksonia antarctica (tasmanian tree fern) want humus rich, acidic soil with good drainage. the clay poses a problem for the roots of your plant, i'm afraid. also, if you damage the growing tips the plant will fail to generate new growth and eventually die. if this one fails, amend the soil heavily and start again with a new one, taking care not to damage the new growth when planting.
Reply:If you leave it in the hole that you have dug in the clay, as the other person said it needs good drainage. Provide a new hole, dig over the bottom first this will allow it to drain. Good Luck.

Can I grow a staghorn fern from a leaf clipping?

or what ever you call it, in other words, will a staghorn grow from a leaf clipped from another staghorn fern?

Can I grow a staghorn fern from a leaf clipping?
They usually grow from pups or off sets. Small plant lets from the main plant. Not leaf cuttings.

How to bring an asparagus fern back from the dead?

I have an asparagus fern that is in a large pot outside and was killed by an unexpected frost about a month ago. I just left it out there dead and brown since, but I have now noticed that there are some new green sprigs.

It's in potting soil with nutrients and has been getting adequate water. I have excised all the dead parts of the plant above ground level and left it with just the tiny little live portion. Is there anything I can do to revive it other than just wait and see?

How to bring an asparagus fern back from the dead?
They are extremely hardy. Usually I just cut the whole thing down to about a 2" stub and then cover with a fine mulch and let it come back on it's own. In your case would probably just add a little more of your potting soil around the live growth.
Reply:not sure what area or zone you live in but in alabama this does happen after a freeze...you are correct if no more freezing is coming to prune off all of the deadness. water and wait and it almost always returns hearty and beautiful as ever...good luck
