How do I keep birds from nesting in a hanging fern?

You can put nails with the point up in the pot, when nesting period is over just remove the nails.

How do I keep birds from nesting in a hanging fern?
That is cute, why do you wnat to stop them?? If you fro some very ODD reason have to stop them, then CUT the tree down! But please make sure there are no babies, eggs, or parents in the tree when you cut it down!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Reply:Two methods,

1) some facilities use a device that emits ultrasound which pesters birds.

2) a better method, especially if the fern is near a window is to place the silhouette of a predatory bird (such as a hawk) on the window. You want to place the silhouette in such a way that it isn't blocked by the fern during the bird's flight path to the fern.

We have used method number 2 to some success.
Reply:use chick mesh wire or smaller .This allows the fern to grow in betrween the messing and also keeps out the birds
