In the book it calls them coon dogs but what bread are they really

What type of breed are the dogs in the book where the red fern grows?
Red Bone Hounds.
Reply:I have owned both redbone and Bloodhounds and they are Redbone Coonhounds. A beautiful and get tempermented breed. Best dog for a family pet.

Reply:They are not blood hounds, blood hounds are taller, bigger and have more wrinkles and longer ears. The dogs on the Red Fern Grows are Red Bone Hounds.

Reply:The coon dog in the book are actually a breed. They are called Coon Dogs. There are six main coon hound breeds, Black %26amp; Tan, Bluetick, English, Tree Walker, Plott and Redbone
