Remove any dead foliage around it. This will help the roots breathe and give it more sunlight.
My fern looks very stringy what can i do? If I cut it back will it regrow?
is this a Boston Fern?
Yes you can cut it back and it will regrow. Boston Ferns are quite finicky, and require alot of attention..
My best advice to you is too cut it back, bit not too much. I don't have a pic of the fern, but if it is root bound(that is when the roots are so big in a planter pot that they start to strangle each other) you may have to transplant it into a larger pot. If you do this make sure to leave the potting soil at least an inch to inch and a half down from the top of the planter , so that you can give it alot of water ,and it won't over flo.
Now make sure that you water the fern consistantly. It is easy to tell when a house plant needs water by picking it up and "feeling the weight of it". If it is heavy more than likly is has enough water in it. If it is light , it needs water. Many folks make a mistake when they see house plants that are yellowing, and they add more and more water. In the end they kiil the plant from drowing it or by giving it root disease.
Another trick for ferns, is too use a spray bpttler with water in it and you "mist the leaves of the fern all over and that will help the plant stay green and hydrated.
Good Luck
